SoCal Modern Metagame Week 2 Breakdown
"You could not live with your own failure. Where did that bring you? Back to me"

Hello all!

After a break for MagicCon Las Vegas, Modern is back in full swing down in Southern California. Let's just hop right into this weeks updated spreadsheets!

Overall Metagame

Here we see a few things, first of all Boros energy is still top dog in terms of presence. Still the best limited deck ever printed into constructed, the deck is just clearly powerful, despite some poor matchups, particularly to fast combo decks. Prowess and Affinity seem to be falling off, Prowess likely due to power level (still can't beat the Phlage card), and I'm honestly unsure about Affinity. Perhaps the metagame has adjusted slightly, perhaps the Affinity players are just hiding after crushing the previous few weeks. I do know the metagame does look a bit stronger against Affinity right now, with decks like Samwise Combo, Titan, Belcher, and Storm all either increasing in or maintaining reasonable presence.

Top 8 Metagame

The top 8 metagame shifted significantly with a decreased affinity presence and an increased Titan presence. Boros Energy seems to be the big mainstay week-to-week, and I will not acknowledge Jeskai could even potentially be a real deck. Besides that, we seem some new graveyard combo decks cracking top cut, and even taking home both of the big RCQs this past weekend.

Card of the Week!

New Season: Same Management

Titan players were out en force this week, steamrolling their way to both top 8s with ease, particularly Nick Tu, who may not have one, but I believe lost 0 rounds in Swiss in either of those tournaments. Just a reminder that in SoCal, you can never espace the menace that is Primothy Timothy.

Congratulations!

This weeks winner of TableTop Tavern's second Alesmith RCQ of the season was Sam Holcombe, on Dredge!

And his mirror demon, Alex Soderberg

And, at Cardbordia's huge 1k, Vinnie Fino came out on top playing Goryo's Vengeance!

He sent me this white t-shirt ass memorial photo on his own volition
He's not dead I promise

See y'all next week!

And to those of you attending RC Cincinatti, best of luck!
