Socal RCQ Metagame: Week One (or three) Breakdown
This is the start of a new high-effort weekly piece (that I'm definitely not penning because it basically writes itself and allows me to get in the habit of posting) about Southern California's RCQ metagame!
Hello all!
This is the start of a new high-effort weekly piece (that I'm definitely not penning because it basically writes itself and allows me to get in the habit of posting) about Southern California's RCQ metagame!
This was originally supposed to take place after the first week, but I both got lazy and threw all those decklists away, so here we are. Here are Some of the numbers we are working with today, after the weekend of the 26th.
First and foremost, we see that the metagame is largely reflective of what one would expect looking at MTGgoldfish or MTGtop8 (both excellent resources). Boros Energy and affinity seem to be the most popular decks, more or less as expected. Prowess has seen a strong resurgence, at least for the moment, partially on the strength of our card of the week (to be discussed later), Flashback! Jeksai Blink is still popular, and the Ricky Tovar Cabal with their Goryo's decks were out en force, especially in Los Angeles. From there, we see a smattering of modern metagame staples, and a bunch of really cool archetypes both being innovated and revived for the new season.
On the other hand, above are the decks that converted to top 8 (still including those that did not, hope springs eternal or whatever). Affinity massively outperformed expectations, which I personally think is due to the power level of the deck rather than any particularly good matchup or facilitative metagame. Boros, Jeskai, and Yawg all converted relatively well, although at this point (and frankly, forever) all this paper data should be taken with boulders worth of salt, seeing as their just is not that much data. Still, it does look like we will be seeing much of what we saw at last years Vegas and Houston RCs, plus the newer Affinity deck. Modern hasn't seen huge shakeups recently, but if there is a deck that can make things move, I think it's definitely Affinity.
Card of the Week!

PSYCHE! Flashback sucks baby its all about our Lord and Savior Kappa Cannoneer! Have you ever wanted to make a 5/5 on turn one? Would you like it to also be a Slippery Bogle? Kappa Cannoneer (and friends) have a solution for you. For the low, low price of your entire hand and the esoteric idea of "consistency", you can just play this card and kill your opponent before they have a change to develop anything resembling a gameplan!
Disclaimer: The Logic Knot is not responsible for any mulligans caused by running the Affinity deck. If you do not win it is a skill issue, if you do win, it is only because we told you to play the deck. Consider being on the play more often for maximum efficacy.
Congratulations!
Just want to shoutout this weeks RCQ winners, Gio Chisci:

Zane Toledo (also known as meatMTG on all social media platforms):

And Seth Doddridge for also winning Collector Legion's 4-26-26 RCQ!
See y'all next week!
